This month the Dish Network dropped the price of its High Definition Digital Video Recorder from $1000 to $549. I had been interested in this unit for some time, even at the higher price point, but had decided to wait a while since the unit was on the “bleeding edge” and, as such, showed a number of growing pains that caused a lot of people to complain. When the price was cut essentially in half I decided it was worth the gamble to add HD time-shifting capabilities to my system. I believe that my patience paid off, because in the month that I have have the 921 it has performed as advertised - providing a way to record and play back the growing number of High Definition (HD) offerings on the Dish Network with the clarity of the original broadcast.
There was a notable software upgrade in early December and, perhaps, this solved a myriad of issues. All I can say is, so far so good. The 250Gig hard drive can hold about 158 hours of Standard Definition (SD) programming and/or approximately 25 hours of HD content which has a little over 6 times the information of an equivalent SD broadcast.
Over the next year or so I’ll update this page if there are any significant problems that develop. If not, then I’m just going to enjoy HD even when I can’t be home to watch it when aired! Additionally, I’ll report on any enhancements to the 921 that make it an even better product.
The early verdict is two thumbs up. My unit is performing as advertised.
