What Does "Anamorphic" Mean?

As more and more people purchase wide screen monitors in order to view High Definition material, the term “anamorphic” is being used more and more frequently. “Anamorphic” has been around in the cinema for over half a century and it is one of the most misunderstood concepts in home theater.  There is a presentation called, “The Ultimate Guide to Anamorphic Widescreen DVD (For Dummies)” which does an excellent job of explaining the concept.
