Dark City and the SONY VW10HT

DARK CITY is often mentioned when people want to know if the SONY VPL-VW10HT is capable of producing an acceptable picture when watching so-called "dark" movies. Even though I had this DVD I had not watched it since installing the projector since I had access to many other "dark" movies, including SLEEPY HOLLOW, et. al. However, after many questions, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to see exactly how DARK CITY fared on the SONY.

My original intention was to take a few screen shots to share with others. However, I found myself sitting down and watching the movie in its entirety once it unfolded on my large screen. When I had originally watched this movie several years ago on my Pioneer Elite PRO-75 rear projection monitor the picture had, of course, been dark (with rich blacks) and very detailed. Although the VW10HT could not, of course, match the blacks of the CRT RPM it still provided a detailed, dark picture that was very watchable. In fact the sheer size of the picture quickly drew me in and time flied (unlike in the movie) until it was over before I knew it! I liked this movie when I first saw it on my PRO-75. I loved it on the VW10HT. At no time did I feel I was missing anything by not having the blackest of blacks. In fact, it was never even an issue. Details in the dark picture were sufficient to follow all the nuances of the presentation. And the larger picture allowed me to see some things I hadn't seen in the earlier viewing. In other words, the VW10HT passes the DARK CITY test as far as I'm concerned with flying colors!

Let me share with you a couple of screen shots from this movie. As with all of the screen shots taken with my KODAK DC260 digital camera, remember that the limitations of the camera (not the projector) might not reproduce the colors exactly (due to the color characteristics of the KODAK which favors the green portion of the spectrum in low light situations). All pictures are presented without any additional processing.
